It's been a while since I have wanted to post about Room Mate. The reason why I think this newly born hotel chain deserves a whole post to itself is the same why I wouldn't do it for any other chain. They are good hotels, in every sense. Like easyJet did with weekend breaks a few years ago, they have finally democratised hotels for the mainstream. Up until now, the savvy traveller enjoyed cheap flights and had a myriad of information about anywhere just a click away thanks to that revolution called the Internet. But hotels... hotels were another story. The chances of finding a well-located, decently priced but stylish hotel in which to fall asleep in a city like Madrid were reduced to a couple of wanna-be badly refurbished buildings in areas that wouldn't even appear in one of TimeOut's local guides. Luckily enough someone saw the breach and much to the savvy traveller's delight started up a chain of hotels that would provide just that: nice hotels in cool areas at a reasonable price. Not being enough, they even have person's names, making them even more attractive: who would not like to sleep in a hotel named Alicia?
For those of us who can only dream of lying down in a Four Seasons but would rather stay in a youth hostel than paying for your standard overpriced Travelodge, Room Mate hotels undoubtedly call for a bit more than just our attention. Aimed at both urbanites and business travellers, this chain is set to make a difference. Now ranging throughout quite a few Spanish cities, NYC and Miami, 2009 is set for further expansion both in Spain and in parts of Latin America.
Oh, and the next time you are on a weekend break don't forget to pack your best-looking swimming wear: some of them even have a designer swimming pool on the roof!

Hacía tiempo que quería hacer un post sobre los hoteles Room Mate. La razón es la misma por la cual no haría lo mismo con cualquier otra cadena de hoteles: son buenos hoteles en el sentido más amplio de la palabra. Como hiciera easyJet hará unos años con las escapadas de fin de semana, han demorcratizado los hoteles de diseño para la masa. Hasta ahora, el viajero independiente disfrutaba de vuelos baratos y de una cantidad ingente de información sobre cualquier sitio a un click de distancia gracias a ese milagro tecnológico llamado internet. Pero los hoteles... los hoteles eran otro cantar. Las posibilidades de encontrar un hotel de diseño, a precio razonable y en una zona de interés en una ciudad como Madrid se reducían a un par de quieroynopuedo malamente reformados en barrios que no saldrían ni siquiera en una guía para madrileños. Por suerte alguien vió el hueco en el negocio y, con suerte para nosotros, empezaron una cadena de hoteles que ofrecían justo eso que era imposible encontrar: un hotel de diseño a buen precio y en una zona cool. Y por si no fuera poco, encima les pusieron nombres de personas, haciéndolos aún mas originales y atractivos: quien no querría dormir en un hotel llamado Alicia?
Para aquellos de nosotros que sólo podemos soñar con un Four Seasons pero que antes preferíriamos dormir en un albergue a hacerlo en un hotel de cadena mediocre y con sobreprecio, los hoteles Room Mate merecen algo más que nuestra atención. Dirigido tanto a urbanitas de fin de semana como a viajeros de negocios, esta cadena sin duda marca la diferencia. Con establecimientos en varias ciudades españolas, Nueva York y Miami; durante el 2009 llegarán a Latioamérica.
Ah, y no olvides llevarte tu bañador más fashion la próxima vez que te vayas de fin de semana: algunos de los hoteles tienen hasta piscina de diseño en la azotea!
