100 years of heart beats / 100 años de latidos

Next week one of my favourite streets in the world celebrates it's 100th birthday. And it does so after major reforms both in and around it that have given it back the shine it had somehow lost over the years. Film premiers (and sets since some of you will recognize the first picture from a famous scene in Spanish cinema), the finest shopping, theaters, one civil war, offices and even one of the oldest jewelry's of the city: one century of stories, lives and moments condensed in one stretch of tarmac that represent the essence of being a madrileño. This street is the heart and its rhythm sets the heartbeat by which citizens live. At the bottom of the post you will find a link to a video caption showing in fast images how 24 hours in this famous street go by. I am talking, of course, of Madrid's Gran Vía.

La semana que viene una de mis calles favoritas cumple cien años. Y lo hace después de una gran reforma tanto en la misma como en sus alrededores que le han devuelto el brillo que había perdido con los años. Premieres de cine (y de escenas ya que muchos recordareis la primera foto como protagonista de una de las escenas más famosas del cine español), compras, teatros, una guerra civil, oficinas e incluso una de las joyerías más antiguas de la ciudad: la calle ha sido espectador de un siglo de vidas, historias y momentos en un trozo de asfalto que representan la esencia del ser madrileño. Esta calle es el corazón y con su ritmo marca el latido de todos sus habitantes.
