It's crazy how some places can seem so similar to your hometown yet you still largely feel like you just landed in a different planet. Probably that's the best way to describe my recent trip to Japan. Cruising the Pacific islands for a bit over two weeks has provided not only a well deserved rest but also a bit of cultural influx other than European and North American city-hopping, which has proved extremely rewarding. Even though we all feel a bit Japanese, especially thanks to a recent boom in sushi, anime comics and Sofia Coppola's unmissable Lost in Translation (shoote at Tokyo's Park Hyatt hotel), like everything, it has to be seen to be believed. From the vibrant Tokyo to the more calm and traditional Kyoto including gastronomical heaven Osaka or the emotionally loaded Hiroshima where a visit to the museum will shed a tear or two no matter how strong you think you are, Japan is a place of stark contrast and cultural richness.
Should you be short of ideas on where to spend your next holidays, I very much recommend a trip to this Far East country (but avoid it during the summer unless you enjoy subtropical heat and torrential rain). But until then, I'll share with you some of the most curious and interesting images we've seen throughout our stay. As it was very rightly pointed out at some point in history, one picture speaks better than a thousand words.
Es increíble como algunos lugares parecen tan parecidos a tu lugar de origen si bien cuando estás allí la sensación es más bien la de haber aterrizado en otro planeta. Esa es probablemente la mejor manera de describir mi reciente viaje a Japón. Recorriendo este archipiélago a orillas del Pacífico durante algo más de dos semanas nos ha proporcionado no sólo un merecido descanso pero también un muy necesario barniz cultural distinto al que se recibe en Europa o Norteamérica. Aunque todos nos sentimos en parte un poco japoneses gracias al boom que ha recibido la cultura nipona a través del sushi, los cómics manga y la imprescindible obra maestra de Sofia Coppola Lost in Translation (rodada en el hotel Park Hyatt de Tokio) , como todo en la vida debe ser visto para ser creído. Desde la vibrante Tokio, hasta el remanso de paz y tranquilidad que es la más tradicional Kioto pasando por el paraíso culinario que es Osaka o la siempre emocionante visita a Hiroshima (donde el museo arrancará una lágrima hasta al más fuerte), Japón es un país de contrastes y riqueza cultural.
Por ello, si estás corto de ideas para tu próximo viaje, te recomiendo encarecidamente una visita al país nipón (eso sí, no en verano a menos que te guste el calor tropical y las lluvias torrenciales). Pero hasta entonces, me tomaré la libertad de compartir algunas de las imágenes más interesantes y curiosas del viaje.
