When I first started uni a couple of years ago I landed in a foreign city, and even though I spoke the language and had been immersed in its culture (well, sort of) since I was four it still felt quite different from what I was used to. However, if there was something that struck me straight away was the fact that everything at university, from the student's union to the resident halls ran through a single place. Facebook. Needless to say I barely knew what Facebook was about at that time.
Sure the case was that eventually I set up a profile and well, started using it. That was September 2007 and I barely went in once a week, mainly to check out the parties for that weekend. I used the internet sure, but definitely it wasn't my call. And now? Well now, Janary 2010...I check it a few (dozen) times a day since I don't even have to switch on a computer: it's straight on my phone. And it's not the only one I check. Twitter is also a huge deal and arguably more interesting than Facebook. Point being, nowadays anything can be done through these social networks. From keeping in touch with friends, to updates on bands, celebs, your sneaker brand, coca-cola or even the guys from your favourite radio show: everyone is in it. Want to give your feedback on your band's latest show? drop a comment on their myspace or Facebook page. Chances are they will read it and, if lucky, answer you. You tell me that five years ago and I would laugh at your face. Even NGOs and charities ask for aid through social networks. Basically if you aren't in it, you are out.
The thing is that I found out today that some fancy advertising agency is even launching its graduate recruitment through Facebook. Entirely. Now that is something. It's crazy how in the space of only a couple of years this phenomena has evolved so much. For me, a guy who grew without a mobile phone until he was quite a grown up teenager and started using the internet even later this change seems unthinkable of. Five years ago texting someone was the novelty for god's sake! Which makes me wonder what we'll be up to in the next five years.
I never cease to be impressed by such a development that does nothing but reinforce my conviction of the human being's capacity to reach further and further every time.
Cuando empecé la universidad hará unos dos años aterricé en una ciudad desconocida y aunque hablaba muy bien el idioma y había estado en una suerte de inmersión cultural desde los cuatro años, seguía siendo algo muy distinto a lo que estaba acostumbrado. Aun así hubo algo que me chocó especialmente y fue el hecho de que en la universidad todo, absolutamente todo desde la asociación universitaria hasta el colegio mayor funcionaban a través de un sólo sitio. Facebook. Ni qué decir tiene que yo no tenía ni pajolera idea de qué era eso.
Evidentemente me registré y lo empecé a usar. Eso era en septienbre de 2007 y por aquel entonces me metía una vez a la semana para mirar a ver qué fiestas tocaban ese viernes. Y hoy? Hoy, enero de 2010...bueno digamos que me meto unas cuantas (docenas) de veces ya que ni siquiera necesito un ordenador porque lo tengo en el teléfono directamente. Y no sólo miro Facebook, otras redes como Twitter también (incluso más interesantes). El caso es que cualquier cosa se puede hacer a través de ellas, las redes sociales. Desde mantener el contacto con los amigos, a seguir tu música, marca de zapatillas favorita, gente famosa, coca-cola o a los tipos de tu programa de radio fetiche: todo el mundo está dentro. Quieres dar tu opinión sobre el último concierto de tu grupo? Ponles un comentario en Facebook o myspace, que seguro que lo leerán y, con un poco de suerte, responderán. Me dices eso hace cinco años y me río en tu cara. Incluso las ONGs se han subido al carro y ahora piden ayuda a través de ellas. El que no está dentro está fuera.
El tema es que hoy me enteré que una firma de publicidad bastante conocida ha decidido hacer su proceso de selección para recién graduados directamente a través de Facebook. Eso ya son palabras mayores. Para mí, un tipo que no tuvo móvil hasta bien entrada la adolescencia y que empezó a usar internet mucho después esta evolución me parece increíble. ¡Mandar un sms hace cinco años era la novedad por dios! Lo que me hace reflexionar sobre lo que estaremos usando en cinco años.
Es algo que no me deja de asombrar y que prueba, una vez más, la excepcional capacidad del ser humano para llegar más y más lejos.
