Whenever I hear someone saying that humanity is bound for disaster with climate change, political instability or just lack of love for our fellow peers I get a weird feeling halfway between craving to smash their heads and profound sympathy. Aside from the negativity of the statement-something no one should bear- , the fact that someone questions the ability of society (and ultimately theirs) to overcome difficulty is something I cannot understand. Maybe because I try to look at the positive side of things, the "bright side of life" Monthy Python would say, I am completely unaware of such an idea.
However, for some reason or another, I believe there is change going on. Earlier this month, as we are all well aware of, one of the poorest countries in the world received the final blow to an already alarming situation, worsening what no one thought could get worse. Now whenever there is a natural disaster, rich countries (some more than others though) switch their aid engines on to provide relief and that this occurred in this particular catastrophe is no news. What is new however, or at least unusual for what we've seen lately, is the intensity of such aid. The world has thrown itself to help this country, literally. Yesterday a huge telethon ran live throughout the world to raise funds and almost every big star from TV, music, Hollywood - you name it- that you can think of was there, either singing, presenting or picking up calls. The two latter former U.S Presidents, far as they can be in ideology, launched a specific relief fund last week and they've counted over 140,000 donors already. Aid from almost every country in the world is pouring on a daily basis into the country. Airlines are flying volunteers for free. All this in midst of the worst economic recession the world has seen in over seven decades. Call me an idealist, but if this is not being human I do not know what is.
Now some skeptics will argue that this just shows that helping others is simply good PR for celebs. Or that when people are facing bad prospects they tend to help others more, because they feel more identified. It's true, maybe its just that- or maybe not. Maybe we are changing and starting to be less self-centered, for good. Maybe we've seen that being greedy with the majority below us is horribly un-human now that many people in rich countries see themselves as such a minority: no job and no prospect of getting one either and probably with their house foreclosed too. Whilst others earn millions thanks to bailouts funded through taxes payed not without effort.
Maybe now that we've learnt it the hard way, we might actually change our attitudes and start behaving like human beings.
Siempre que escucho a alguien decir que la humanidad está abocada al desastre me entra una sensación a medio camino entre la compasión y las ganas de estamparles la cabeza. Dejando la negatividad- que por otro lado nadie debería tener- por un momento, el hecho de que alguien se cuestione la habilidad de la sociedad (y en última instancia la suya misma) para superar las dificultades es algo que no entiendo. Quizás es por que yo siempre intento verle el lado positivo a las cosas, el lado bueno de la vida que dirían los Monthy Python, que algo así no me cabe en la cabeza.
Aun así, por una razón u otra, siento que algo está cambiando. A principios de mes, como todos sabéis, uno de los países más pobres del mundo puso la guinda final a una situación ya de por sí alarmante, empeorando lo que nadie pensaba que podía empeorar. Pues bien, como con cualquier otra catástrofe, los países ricos (unos más que otros cabe decir) pusieron en marcha su maquinaria de ayuda ipso-facto, de eso no hay nada nuevo. Ahora lo que si que es una novedad, o al menos no en la línea de lo que hemos visto recientemente, es la intensidad de dicha ayuda. El mundo se ha volcado con este país, literalmente. Ayer mismo un telemaratón fue emitido en todo el mundo para recaudar fondos. Cualquier estrella de la música, la tele, el cine o de lo que se te venga a la cabeza, todas estaban ahí: presentando, cantando o al teléfono respondiendo a las llamadas de donantes. Los dos últimos presidentes de EEUU, por mucho que difieran en ideología, lanzaron un fondo de ayuda la semana pasada y ya llevan más de 140,000 donantes. La ayuda llega en cantidades ingentes diariamente desde todos los países del mundo. Compañías aéreas están volando a los voluntarios gratis. Todo esto en medio de la recesión económica más severa de los últimos 70 años. Pues bien, si esto no es ser humano no sé lo que es.
Ya sé que algunos escépticos dirán que ayudar a otros es simplemente fruto de un fantástico ejercicio de relaciones públicas para los famosos. O que cuando la gente lo pasa mal como ahora es más propensa a ayudar porque se identifican más con su situación. Quizás es sólo si sí, o quizás no. Quizás estamos cambiando nuestro egocentrismo para mejor. Quizás hemos visto que explotar a la minoría más pobre es horriblemente antihumano ahora que tanta gente en los países más desarrollados es precisamente parte de esa minoría: sin trabajo y sin perspectivas de tenerlo y probablemente con la casa desahuciada también. Mientras otros ganan millones gracias a rescates pagados con el dinero de los impuestos que con tanto sudor pagan todos los meses.
Quizás ahora que lo hemos aprendido por las malas realmente cambiaremos nuestra actitud. Y comenzaremos a comportarnos como seres humanos.
