30 years ago, during the Olympic Games held in Mexico City, two athletes were dispossessed from their medals because of a political gesture carried out in the podium. Politics are banned from the Olympic Games. Yet they are probably the best showcase for any country. And if not, ask the Chinese what they thought about their Olympics held a few weeks ago. That political gesture, like many others, had a dream behind.
Three days ago, the outcome of the elections in the US, whilst expected, was striking. A black sitting in the Oval Room for the next four years. Change is expected and whilst I'm very sceptical about the deep-rooted change that is needed, there is no doubt that at least there will certainly be some new ideas coming through. And just that is enough for a dream.
A dream that goes back three decades to those two men standing in a podium. And of those who dreamed with them.
Hace 30 años, en los juegos olímpicos de México, dos atletas fueron desposeídos de sus medallas debido a un gesto político hecho durante la entrega de las mismas, en el podio. Los gestos políticos están prohibidos en las olimpiadas, aún cuando las mismas olimpiadas funcionan como el mejor escaparate político que un país puede tener. Y si no que se lo pregunten a los chinos. Ese gesto político, como muchos otros, tenía un sueño detrás.
Hace tres días, el resultado de las elecciones en los Estados Unidos, si bien era esperado, no fue menos impactante. Un negro en el despacho oval de la Casa Blanca durante los próximos cuatro años. Se esperan cambios y aunque yo soy bastante escéptico respecto a que de verdad se lleve a cambio el cambio profundo que tanto necesita ese país, sin duda va a haber una renovación de ideas. Y eso es suficiente para un sueño.
Un sueño que se remonta tres décadas atrás, a esos dos hombres en el podio. Y a todos los que soñaron con ellos.
